Rilski Manastir SPA (BG0000496), a high-mountain area, is entirely owned by the Bulgarian Patriarchy. It has 94.8% natural forests with an average age of 99 years and fabulous cliffs, making it an excellent Bearded Vulture habitat in Bulgaria. While not in the Balkan Mountains, it serves as an alternative site for reintroduction if needed.
The area is also historically important for the Cinereous Vulture, making it a high-quality option for their reintroduction. It’s strategically located 40 km from Kresna SPA, where Griffon Vultures breed, and Cinereous Vulture reintroduction is planned. Releasing Cinereous Vultures in Rilski Manastir will promote bird movement in both directions, optimizing habitat use.
