FWFF is a leading project partner for Kotel area (Kotlenska Planina SPA BG0002029) in Bulgaria.

Kotlenska Planina, located in the Eastern Balkan chain, has been a focus of our NGO since 2000. It now boasts vulture facilities, livestock farms, and 300+ ha of well-managed land for the project’s target species needs. The area played a crucial role in the Griffon Vulture reintroduction project from 2010-2016, resulting in the successful breeding of 28-30 vulture pairs. In 2022, it continues to host a population of 80-110 Griffon Vultures, including non-tagged and tagged birds from Serbia and Israel. Additionally, Cinereous Vulture releases since 2018 have led to 15-18 individuals and 5 pairs as of 2023, with successful chick fledging, marking their return to the area. This site is also suitable for Bearded Vulture reintroduction, as suggested by Parvanov et al.’s 2018 feasibility study.
